ESSAY 02
Does AI Undermine My Wholeness?
Is AI a force that fragments me, or a companion that can help me live a more whole life?
I used to think that AI might interfere with human wholeness.
Watching words, images, and code appear in an instant at the press of a button was astonishing, but it also made me uneasy. If the process of thinking things through and learning by trial and error disappears, can we still call the result a living act of creation, however impressive it may be?
But as I have begun using AI more actively, my thinking has changed. AI was not, in itself, something that made me whole or caused me to fragment.
What mattered was not how easily something could be made, but what I was making and how it connected back to my life.
I now delegate to AI, asynchronously, work that once demanded a great deal of my time and energy to track down myself. AI finds scattered information, gathers it in my hub, and organizes it into a form I can revisit. I then review the results, decide what matters, and choose the next direction.
In this process, AI is not living my life for me. Instead, it relieves me of repetitive searching and organizing so that I can devote more energy to the judgments, relationships, and creative work that matter most. What AI produces is not an endpoint but feedback that returns to me. Through it, I refine my thinking, take action, and grow little by little.
I think of wholeness as a state in which the important parts of life come alive together without harming one another. Seen this way, AI need not be an external force that breaks apart my wholeness. It can be a tool that strengthens the center already trying to come alive within me.
Of course, there are aspects of AI's speed that require vigilance. If I keep making things simply because I can, or if the outputs begin to outrun my own experience and judgment, life becomes fragmented again. ‘Being able to make anything’ must not replace the question, ‘What do I truly want to make?’
So when I work with AI, I try not to lose sight of this question:
“Does what I made with AI make me feel more alive? And does it connect the important parts of my life more deeply?”
If the answer is yes, AI is more than a productivity tool. It is a companion that participates in my living process, helping me see my life more clearly and shape it more consciously.
In the end, what matters is not what AI makes for me. It is the center from which I live alongside AI.
When my intentions, experience, and judgment remain at the center, and AI's power expands that center, we can create outcomes that are more alive than either of us could easily make alone.
And if those outcomes help me grow and come more fully alive, then AI and wholeness are not opposites. Together, they can become part of a single process of creating a more whole life.
